Characteristically,
the West has emphasized action in the world with little recognition
of contemplation. The East has done the opposite, placing more value
on meditative spirituality. But as Eastern teachings become transplanted
in Western soil, we are beginning to appreciate the value of turning
inward. The integration of contemplative and active approaches is one
of the benefits of walking the labyrinth.

A
seated meditation demands a disciplined concentration that many of us
do not have the ability to sustain amid the complexity of our lives.
The labyrinth can be a tremendous help in quieting the mind, because
the body is moving. Movement takes away the creative tension that disurbs
our efforts to quiet our thought processes. A walking meditation fosters
the mind-body connection and allows images to form within the mind of
the journey the body is taking.

Some suggestions for walking the Labyrinth:
Pause at the entrance. Become quiet and centered.
Enter and follow the path. There are no dead-ends. It is not a maze. Walk purposefully. Observe the process. When you reach the center, stay there and focus several moments. Leave when it seems appropriate.
Be attentive on the way out. Exit. Turn and face the entrance. Give an acknowledgement of ending, such as "Amen."
After walking the labyrinth reflect on your experience.
Walk often. You are welcome anytime.
